consulate in benghazi tuesday. a battle between police and protesters continued for a fourth day in cairo and in tunisia clouds of black smoke were seen as protesters stormed the gate of the u.s. embassy in tunis. friday's demonstrations were not confined to the middle east. this was the scene outside the american embassy in london. the protests seem at least in part a response to an internet movie trailer produced in the u.s. it angered muslims for its unflattering portrayal of the prophet muhammad, much like the accelerated pace of last year's arab spring, word of the video spreading across the region rapidly through social media. youtube blocked the video in egypt and in libya where those attacks on american personnel took place tuesday, the scope of which stunned the u.s. diplomatic community. an official said friday arrests had been made in connection with those killings in benghazi. >> there are reports tonight of violent protests in more than two dozen nations in northern africa, the middle east and europe.

last night we learned the news of this attack in benghazi. in some cases, americans lay down their lives for the country and the country is only strong as the character of our people and the service of those civilians and military who represent us over the globe. no attacks will alter that character or clips the light of the values we stand for. today we mourn for more americans that represent the very best of the united states of america. we will not waiver in our commitment to see that justice is done for the terrible act and make no mistake justice will be done. but we also know the lives these americans led stand in stark contrast to those of their attackers. these four americans stood up for freedom. and human dignity. they should give every american great pride in the country that they served. and the hope that our flag represents to people around the globe who also yearn to live in freedom and with dignity. we grieve with their families, but let us carry on their memory and let us continue their work of seeking a stronger america and a

are you saying president obama is benghazi? >> no, but i'm saying he's responsible for failure in afghanistan and iraq. iraq is now disintegrating, al qaeda is coming back. we didn't leave a residual force in afghanistan, he overruled his military advisers on several occasions, including 30,000 instead of 40,000 for the surge and accelerated withdrawal dates and now we have a situation where taliban and our enemies know we are leaving, and the whole premise, was to train afghans to turn over these responsibilities to them, and leave. now how can we train and work with these people if so many them are killing americans we can't even train and operate with them? by that policy, it has been an abject failure. >> we'll talk more with senator mccain about domestic issues a bit later in the program. first, bob baer and fran townsend. fran, served as a member of the cia external advisory committee, and last month visited libya with her employer, mccannkancan forbes. he said that there were security concerns. >> we had a long conversat

behind-the-scenes an fbi team is preparing to fly to benghazi to investigate the attack. the compound behind these walls is the major crime scene but any evidence left inside will have been badly contaminated by looters and curious local people who flooded in after the attack. here's what eyewitnesss, officials and libyan commanders in charge that night have told us. sometime around 9:30 p.m. about 70 armed men attacked the consulate's main gates with guns and heavy weapons. they then stormed in, overwhelming local and american security. with all four buildings on fire the libyan government ordered a local militia to the rescue. that militia helped to ferry 31 americans and the body of sean smith out the back gate in armored cars to a house a mile away rented by the u.s. government. shortly afterwards it too came under fierce attack. what we still don't know is how back at the compound ambassador stevens got separated from his security detail only to be found dead or dying just after midnight by the crowd. suspicions for the attack have focused on a powerful islamic milit
